CHARLESTON, S.C. - SoCon leader College of Charleston (9-4-1, 5-1) edged the Georgia Southern women's soccer team (0-13-0, 0-6) 1-0 with a 27th minute goal Sunday.

The Eagles battled with the Cougars all day and held them to one goal. Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.) added five saves in the first half to hold the College of Charleston to a 1-0 halftime lead. The defense shut down the College of Charleston's offense in the second half and prevented the Cougars from recording a shot on goal.

Alyssa Bearden scored the match's lone goal in the 27th minute. Lindsay Frey found Bearden for a breakaway shot from 10 yards out.

The College of Charleston opened the match with three shots. Morgan Benz took the first shot of the match in the 9th minute but missed wide. Brittany Schneider and Benz put shots on target, but Santos made saves on both.

The Eagles went on the attack in the 16th minute and recorded a couple of nice shots. Candace Marshall (Bridgewater, Mass.) took a shot in traffic that was blocked by a Cougar's defender, and Michelle Carlson (Melbourne, Fla.) missed high of the net a minute later.

Santos made two more saves in the 20th and 23rd minutes. Bearden and Patton put shots on target for the College of Charleston.

Bearden found the net in the 27th minute, scoring on a breakaway shot from 10 yards out.

Lindsay Frey entered the match in the 27th minute and went on a tear, recording four shots in the remainder of the first half. Frey finished the day with six shots and an assist.

Carlson almost tied the match in the 64th minute with a shot on goal, but Katie Tate came up with the save.

Georgia Southern blanked the Cougars in the second half but were unable to find the game-tying goal.

The Eagles return home for their final two home games this weekend.
