STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern track & field opened up day one of the 2009 Southern Conference Championships in fourth place and will look to gain ground tomorrow.

The Eagles got off to a strong start in the heptathlon. Lynndsey Hyter (Dallas, Texas) finished second in the 100 meter hurdles and came in with a time of 14.92. Melanie Trumbo (Lilburn, Ga.) won the high jump portion of the heptathlon with a jump of 1.76 meters and moved into second place after two events. Trumbo also set a new season high with the mark. Hyter took the heptathlon points after the first day of competition after finishing first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.07.

In the 400 meter dash Ashley Bush-Hardy (Fayetteville, Ga.) finished second in heat one and advanced to the finals with a time of 55.78.

Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) qualified first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.77 and set a new season high. Courtney Ware (Indianapolis, Ind.) came in third in heat one and qualified for the finals with a time of 12.17.

Anthony picked up her first event win taking the long jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 6.08 meters. Hyter finished third in the event with a jump of 35.50 meters.

GSU had a strong showing in the long jump and took two of three places on the medal stand. Anthony won the event with a mark of 6.08 meters. Hyter came in third with her best mark of the season after she recorded a jump of 5.78 meters.

The Eagles advanced three to the 400 meter finals after Bush-Hardy and Kristin Olson (Senoia, Ga.) finished one, two in heat one. Bush-Hardy set a new season high and paced all competitors with a time of 1:04.11. Olson qualified fifth with a time of 1:04.61. Ware advanced to her second finals event with a time of 1:04.89.

Olson qualified for the 100 meter hurdles finals with a time of 14.55.

Anthony qualified for her second finals in the 200 meter dash. Anthony came in second in heat three and qualified fourth with a time of 24.64 setting a new season high.

Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) qualified for the final 800 meter run spot over Megan Isaccs by a second and finished with a time of 2:15.04.

Trumbo continued her fine day with a third place finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 35.50 meters.

The Eagles will look to improve on their fourth place finish after day one of the 2009 SoCon Outdoor Championships during the final day of competition Sunday.
