Fall 2008: Showed a strong outing at the Georgia Southern Invitational in both singles and doubles • Advanced to the singles final where he faced Federico Levi of North Florida • With doubles partner Matthew Sands, the tandem reached the quarterfinals • The Eagle duo also captured the doubles crown at the UNF Invitational • They defeated 31st ranked Auburn’s Milan Krnjetin/Alex Stamchev to take the title • Bypassed three opponents to reach the quarterfinals in singles action at the UNF Invitational • Wrapped up the doubles fall campaign with a domineering 9-5 record overall. 2007-2008: Surpassed his career high in wins of 14 with 15 • Came in second on the team with most singles wins • Played mainly at the No.2 position • Went 4-4 in singles conference action • Defeated 50th ranked Christian Bergh of AASU in fall competition • Accounted for the Eagles’ only win against Furman with a defeat over Bo Ladyman • Posted a 15-11 record in doubles action • Primary partner was Matthew Sands in conference play • Tandem went 5-4 in overall doubles • Went on a 5-match win streak in March • Compiled an 8-4 record with Gregory Bekkers.
2006-2007: Played majority of his matches as a sophomore from the No. 1 position • Compiled a 5-14 overall record in 2006-2007 • Was 2-6 in Southern Conference action during singles play • Was 0-1 versus nationally ranked opponents • Very successful in doubles competition with primary partner Gregory Bekkers • Finished the season with a 6-5 record with Bekkers • Overall doubles record was 7-11 • Was Student-Athlete of the Year.
2005-2006: Ended the season with a 9-11 record overall in singles, 8-11 in doubles • Biggest singles victories came against Chattanooga (2-6, 6-3, 1-0), Furman (3-6, 7-6, 1-0), Winthrop (3-6, 7-5, 1-0) and North Florida (6-3, 6-7, 1-0) • Had doubles wins over Charleston Southern (8-3), Appalachian State (8-6) and Winthrop (8-4) • Joined the team in January 2006 • Did not compete in any fall tournaments.
Prep: Attended St. Gabriel College • Won first division tournament in Belgium • Was ranked as one of the top three players in singles and doubles in Belgium.
Personal: Born July 5, 1987 in Ekeren, Belgium • Son of Frank De Weerdt and Anne Groven • Major is Chemistry with a minor in Biology • Parents both played volleyball for the Belgian National Team • Craziest ambition would be to participate in a main draw of a Grand Slam • People would be surprised to know that he speaks five languages • Favorite sports figure is Roger Federer.
